Nocturne in Red and Bold

My name is Ben. As an English major, I feel this is expected of me.

Three things about Arcade Fire

1.  I think it’s cool they won Album of the Year.  However, I’m confused/surprised/amused that there is a hubbub about it.

2.  Arcade Fire has a bunch of good songs, and there’s only 1 on either of the two albums I have that I would skip, and that’s only if I’m already looking at my iTunes page, cause I don’t dislike it enough to minimize my internet windows and skip it.

HOWEVER, I am amazed how dumb some of their lyrics are, especially compared to their music.  The lyrics aren’t necessarily bad (okay, some of them are bad), but they often feel bland and ostentatious.  For like half of their songs, the lyrics are self-aware in an annoying these-are-important-things-I-am-saying type of way.  It’s hard to articulate, but it’s the same feeling I get in  Creative Writing workshops when I read something that is clearly trying to be flowery or poetic, but the actual effort comes across more clearly than the intended effect.

As I kept listening to the band, I began to wonder why I had never heard anyone else make this criticism.  I started to read some reviews of Arcade Fire and none of them mentioned the stupid lyrics.  It got to the point where I was mad at the reviewers and my conviction started to feel lonely and angry. When I start to feel this way(frequently), I’ll sometimes Google my opinion in hopes that someone else agrees with me.

Luckily, someone did, and I felt a little better and also found a cool new blog to read.

3.  I’ve been looking for a clip of their performance at the Grammy Awards.  I haven’t been able to find one yet.  For some reason, CBS’ official Grammy site has 164 clips from the show, and not a single one is of a musical performance.
